Almost every first Innes plan fails or succeeds here — not at the lighthouse. Choose the path that matches the Adelaide drive, heat and group energy. Do not invent a hybrid that stacks Stenhouse, Pondalowie, Royston Head and Gym Beach onto a single same-day return from Adelaide.

Main surf and fishing bay. No lifeguards. Surfers viewing platform closed (storm damage — still listed 16 Aug 2026).

Plaster Trail
7.6 km return · Inneston–Stenhouse
Old gypsum railway. Car shuffle optional. Unstable ruins at Inneston — stay off structures.
Separate road
Gym Beach Hike
~10 km · 4 hours · own access
Longest walk. Gym Beach is not on the Stenhouse–Pondalowie road network — plan the Corny Point / Gym Beach Road deliberately.

Stenhouse Bay Lookout
easyShort, high-reward cliff-top circuit from the Stenhouse Jetty car park near the Visitor Centre. Nine lookouts with interpretive signage — arguably the best coastal views in the park, over Investigator Strait and the offshore islands.

Royston Head
moderateOut-and-back from the Royston Head Hike car park on the Dolphin Beach road (Parks SA: 4 km / 2 hours return). Mostly flat with some rocky sections to a cliff lookout — rough water, a quieter beach below, and a decent chance of kangaroos, emus and birds.

Coastal realism is not optional reading
- Cliff edges, wind and unpatrolled surf — stay behind barriers; no lifeguards at Pondalowie.
- Fire and heat dominate summer: solid-fuel bans apply in the park’s listed window; check CFS and Total Fire Ban days.
- Vehicle entry, camping and Inneston lodges are three separate official products — do not merge the fees.
- Gym Beach is a different road — not on the Stenhouse–Pondalowie internal network.
- Mobile coverage is patchy — Emergency+, offline maps and a leave-time for the Adelaide reverse.

Pay the vehicle permit, Visitor Centre if open, Stenhouse Bay Lookout Walk, then Cape Spencer and Ethel Beach if sand has left wreck metal showing — without pretending you can also do Gym Beach.

Is there an entry fee for Dhilba Guuranda-Innes?
Yes — a day vehicle entry fee applies. Parks SA lists $14.40 per vehicle (checked 16 Aug 2026) — re-check live. Valid multi-park and single-park vehicle passes work here. Camping and Inneston lodges are separate official bookings. Free coastal-park entry ended at Easter 2026.
How long from Adelaide to Innes National Park?
Parks SA lists about 300 km by road via Port Wakefield, Ardrossan, Minlaton and Warooka — plan on roughly 3–3.5 hours each way. Private vehicle only. There is no ferry and no public transport to the tip.
What should I do first on a first visit?
Start at Stenhouse Bay: Visitor Centre if open (Parks SA lists 10am–3pm seven days — re-check), then the 2 km Lookout Walk. Add Cape Spencer or Ethel if you still have daylight. Do not drive the park roads looking for Gym Beach — that is a separate road off Marion Bay Road. Same-day Adelaide reverse plus Gym Beach hike is how groups fail — see the day-trip article.
Is there surfing?
Pondalowie Bay is the park’s main surf beach. No lifeguards. Rough water, rips and freak waves. Parks SA currently lists the surfers viewing platform closed for storm damage (checked 16 Aug 2026). This is not a learn-to-surf plan.
Is this site official Parks SA?
