Cape Spencer Lighthouse Walk

Short walk to Cape Spencer lighthouse and the Gulawulgawi Ngunda Nhagu lookout. Investigator Strait, Althorpe Islands, and Kangaroo Island on the horizon when the air is clear.

  • Short return to lighthouse and lookout
  • 20–40 minutes plus photo time
  • Short return
  • Effort: easy
  • Best for: The park’s well-known lighthouse, Strait views, winter whales from cliffs

Distance, grade, time and open/closed status change — verify on the official Parks SA park and walks pages before you go.

Do not pair: Do not pair Cape Spencer with Gym Beach on a first same-day Adelaide reverse.

Turnaround: The lookout is the product. If wind is savage, photograph from the path and leave. On-site path wins.

  • Treating Cape Spencer as a park shuttle to Kangaroo Island tours.
  • Stacking Cape Spencer after Gym Beach because both have “beach” in the mental map.

Where you start

Cape Spencer car park

Signed lighthouse / lookout car park. This is a short return, not a multi-hour hike. Stay behind barriers at the lookout.

How to get there

  1. Signed access from the main park road toward Cape Spencer / Ethel Beach / West Cape.
  2. Combine with Ethel Beach if you want the wreck on the same loop of driving.
  3. Do this after Stenhouse orientation on a first visit — not as a cold first stop from Adelaide without water or a wind layer.

How to do it (step by step)

  1. Park at the signed Cape Spencer car park. Wind layer on before you leave the car.
  2. Walk to the lighthouse and Gulawulgawi Ngunda Nhagu lookout. Take the view. Do not climb fences or the light structure.
  3. Hold children at platforms. Share space on busy weekends.
  4. Optional: Ethel Beach for the 1904 wreck — visibility depends on sand; do not climb wreck remains.
  5. Optional second light: West Cape / Barawarli if energy remains.

What to expect

Cape Spencer is the postcard lighthouse stop after Stenhouse. Short return to a stainless-steel light and the Gulawulgawi Ngunda Nhagu lookout over Investigator Strait. Distance is trivial; wind and photo time are not.

This is cultural and navigational landscape, not a playground. Stay on paths. The light is a working aid — look, do not climb.

On clear days the horizon can stretch to Althorpe Islands and sometimes Kangaroo Island. Fog and spray often win. The walk still works as a headland reset.

Logistics

Signed spur off the main park road. Separate car parks for Cape Spencer, Ethel Beach and West Cape — read the signs, do not block loops.

Best first-visit order: Stenhouse Lookout → Cape Spencer → Ethel optional → West Cape optional. Then one west-coast beach if the clock allows.

No services at the headland. Toilets and Visitor Centre context live at Stenhouse. Carry water even for “twenty minutes.”

Ethel Beach add-on

The iron barque Ethel (1904) sits on Ethel Beach when sand levels leave metal visible. Some years you see a lot; some years almost nothing. Leave steel alone — do not climb the wreck.

Freak waves and slippery metal are the hazard class. Kids stay high on sand, not on wreck ribs.

What to pair — and what not to

Strong pairs: Stenhouse Lookout, West Cape loop, Ethel Beach, half-day Stenhouse itinerary.

Weak pairs: Cape Spencer as a micro-stop after already promising Gym Beach and Royston the same afternoon. Pick a primary.

Extra tips

  • Winter: scan for southern right whales from the cliffs.
  • Sunrise and late light are kinder than midday glare.
  • Ask at the Visitor Centre about Ethel sand levels if wreck visibility matters to you.
  • Clear days can pick up Althorpe Islands and sometimes Kangaroo Island — treat as bonus, not guarantee.

Often paired with West Cape / Barawarli— only if energy and weather allow.
