Pondalowie Boardwalk

Dune boardwalk down to Pondalowie Bay — the park’s main surf and fishing beach. Parks SA alert (published 11 June 2025, still listed 16 Aug 2026): the surfers viewing platform is closed due to storm damage. [VERIFY] live alerts before you go. No lifeguards.
- Easy dune boardwalk
- About 40 minutes
- About 1.2 km return
- Effort: easy
- Best for: Surf-beach access, families on the sand (not in unpatrolled water), Pondalowie camp / caravan precinct
Distance, grade, time and open/closed status change — verify on the official Parks SA park and walks pages before you go.
Do not pair: Do not pair Pondalowie + Gym Beach + Royston as three musts on a first Adelaide reverse.
Turnaround: If the platform is signed closed, stay off it. If surf looks wrong, the boardwalk still counts. Official alert page vs “it looked climbable.”
- Day visitors parking on booked camp sites or dune edges because day-use is full.
- Forcing the closed viewing platform or inventing rock ledges as a substitute.

Where you start
Pondalowie Bay day-use / boardwalk start
Signed boardwalk from the Pondalowie precinct. Bush tent sites and a separate caravan/trailer section sit nearby for booked overnight guests. Day visitors use day-use parking only. The beach is unpatrolled.
How to get there
- Enter at Stenhouse Bay / Marion Bay and follow the sealed main park road west to Pondalowie — the practical end of the main internal network. 2WD when dry.
- Pay vehicle entry before you enter (online ahead is smarter than the on-site terminal). Private vehicle only — no ferry or bus into the park.
- Camping here is a separate official Parks SA booking. Day visitors use day-use parking, not booked sites, dune edges or soft verges.
- Do not invent parking on dunes or on someone else’s pad. Peak weekends fill early — midweek is quieter.
- Gym Beach is not down this road. If that is your goal, you need Corny Point / Gym Beach Road off Marion Bay Road — a completely separate access.
How to do it (step by step)
- Park in signed day-use (or your booked site if overnight). Put on a wind layer and sun hat before you leave the car — the bay is exposed.
- Walk the boardwalk through the dunes to the beach. Stay on the boards the whole way. Dunes and coastal vegetation are fragile.
- Treat the surfers viewing platform as closed until Parks SA removes the alert (still listed 16 Aug 2026). Do not force closed infrastructure or invent rock ledges as viewing platforms.
- On the sand: look, fish or surf only with real unpatrolled-water competence. No lifeguards. Never swim alone. When in doubt, stay dry.
- Give hooded plovers space. Keep dogs out of the park entirely (assistance dogs excepted under Parks SA rules).
- Return the same way on the boardwalk. This is short beach access, not a coastal through-hike to every named bay.
What to expect
Pondalowie is the park’s main surf and fishing bay at the end of the sealed road. The boardwalk is the civilised way through the dunes to the sand — about 1.2 km return for most day visitors who are not camping on-site.
Beauty does not cancel ocean physics. No lifeguards. Rips, cold water and freak waves are the main fact. If you are not used to unpatrolled surf beaches, stay on the sand and treat the water as advanced open-coast risk.
Parks SA currently lists the surfers viewing platform closed for storm damage (alert dated 11 Jun 2025, still listed 16 Aug 2026 — re-check live). Do not invent your own rock ledge as a platform.
This is a short access walk with a big safety culture, not a multi-hour summit. Families succeed here when the plan is boardwalk + sand time, not “everyone learns to surf today.”
Who this walk is for
Choose Pondalowie Boardwalk when you want the park’s signature west-coast beach after Stenhouse orientation, or when you are based at a booked Pondalowie / Casuarina site and need the day-use path to the sand.
It suits mixed groups who will respect unpatrolled-water limits. It does not suit people who need a patrolled swim beach or who treat closed infrastructure as optional.
Competent surfers use Pondalowie as a surf destination. Beginners without local knowledge should not treat this page as a learn-to-surf plan.
Day visitor vs camp logistics
Day visitors use day-use parking. Booked camp sites are not free overflow. Bush tent and caravan/trailer sections are separate official products — book only on parks.sa.gov.au.
Vehicle entry is often included with overnight booking — confirm on the specific booking. Peak pressure hits Christmas/New Year, Easter, the October long weekend and school holidays.
A sane full day still starts at Stenhouse (permit, toilets, lookout, Visitor Centre if open). Pondalowie is a late morning or afternoon stop, not a cold first arrival from Adelaide without water or a reverse-drive plan.
Casuarina camp sits nearby as another official overnight option — same fee-split rules, same firewood rules, same “do not squat on booked sites” rule.
Services on the bay are limited. Plan fuel and major supplies via Marion Bay / Warooka. Screenshot bookings and alerts on home Wi-Fi.
Hazards that actually apply
Unpatrolled water. This is not a learn-to-surf destination for beginners without local knowledge and honest risk acceptance. Never alone; keep kids in real supervision range on sand, not “near the shore” as a slogan.
Dunes are fragile. Short-cutting kills vegetation and invites erosion. Stay on the boardwalk both directions.
Feral bees: Parks SA posts higher than normal activity park-wide — care at camps (checked 16 Aug 2026).
Closed viewing platform. Closed means closed. Do not climb damaged structures.
Solid-fuel fires are seasonally banned (Parks SA 2025–26 list: 22 Nov 2025 – 1 Apr 2026 for this park — re-check each season). Firewood collection is prohibited. Gas is usually OK except Total Fire Ban days — verify CFS and Parks SA.
Mobile coverage is patchy. Download Emergency+. Triple Zero needs a signal.
Surf and swim realism
People come here to surf Pondalowie. That is a real culture — and a real risk class. Rips, freak waves and cold water rewrite plans every year on the South Australian coast.
If conditions look wrong, the boardwalk and sand still deliver a west-coast stop. Do not invent courage for photos.
Surfing-focused itinerary on this site is for competent surfers who already know unpatrolled water. It is not a lesson plan.
What to pair — and what not to
Strong pairs: Stenhouse Bay Lookout first, overnight Pondalowie itinerary, surfing-focused plan for competent surfers only, one other west-coast stop (Shell / Dolphin) if energy remains.
Strong overnight pattern: book Pondalowie or Casuarina, do Stenhouse + capes on day one, boardwalk and bay on day two without the Adelaide reverse pressure.
Weak pairs: Pondalowie + Gym Beach + Royston as three “musts” on a first same-day reverse from Adelaide. Pick one primary west-coast stop.
Weak water plan: stacking Ethel wreck rock ledges and Pondalowie surf on tired legs in the same hour. Hazard classes stack badly.

Extra tips
- Parks SA lists a public phone at the Pondalowie caravan/trailer campground — [VERIFY] on arrival; do not depend on mobile coverage.
- Higher than normal feral bee activity is currently posted park-wide — care at camps (checked 16 Aug 2026).
- Peak pressure: Christmas/New Year, Easter, October long weekend, school holidays. Book overnight months ahead if you can.
- As a day stop after Stenhouse and the capes, treat Pondalowie as one west-coast beach — not every beach on the map.
- Overnight: book official sites only. Solid-fuel fire bans apply in the listed seasonal window; firewood collection is prohibited.
- Vehicle entry is often included with overnight booking — confirm on the specific Parks SA booking, do not assume.
- Screenshot alerts and your booking on home Wi-Fi before you lose signal.
Often paired with Stenhouse Bay Lookout— only if energy and weather allow.
