Full day: lookouts, lights, Ethel & Pondalowie

Full day on the ground (best with a Marion Bay or park camp night)Best for: A first full day without trying to see everything

Stenhouse first, then Cape Spencer and West Cape, Ethel if the wreck is showing, then Pondalowie boardwalk — one west-coast beach, not every beach.

This is the classic Innes day if you slept in Marion Bay or Stenhouse camp. From Adelaide the same day is possible but tight — leave yourself time for the drive home.

Order matters: orientation at Stenhouse before lights and surf. Wind, not distance, is what usually cuts the cape stops short.

Narungga cultural sculptures (Gayinbara, Widhadha, Wardli, Burlga Nhandhu, Birra Mara-Widji) sit on self-guided stories around the park — treat them as living culture, not props.

Verify Parks SA alerts (including Pondalowie platform status) and CFS fire danger the morning you go.

Track status, fees, fire bans and weather change — verify on Parks SA and CFS before you leave, then use the timeline below as a planning skeleton only. Vehicle entry, camping and lodges are separate official products.

Timeline

  1. Night before

Plan A / Plan B and reverse clock

Plan A: Stenhouse → capes/Ethel → Pondalowie. Plan B if heat or wind wins: Stenhouse + one cape only. If returning to Adelaide same day, set a hard leave time before you enter. Pay vehicle entry online.

  2. Morning

    Stenhouse Lookout Walk

Toilets and Visitor Centre first (10am–3pm listed — re-check). 2 km loop, nine lookouts. Stay on the path. Ask about Ethel sand levels if the wreck matters to you.

  3. Late morning

    Cape Spencer, Ethel, West Cape

Two short lighthouse stops and the wreck beach. Do not climb the Ethel metal. Skip West Cape if the group is already cold or hangry. Wind layer stays on.

  4. Afternoon

Pondalowie Boardwalk — one beach only

One west-coast beach stop. Surfers viewing platform closed (storm damage — still listed 16 Aug 2026). No lifeguards. Stay on the boardwalk. Do not invent Shell + Dolphin + Gym on top.

  5. Leave / camp

    Fuel and honesty

Same-day Adelaide reverse: leave before fatigue. Overnight: only if you booked official camping or a Marion Bay bed — do not assume walk-up sites in peak.

Packing

  • 2 L+ water per person on warm days
  • Sun hat + SPF
  • Grip shoes
  • Wind/waterproof shell
  • Lunch + snacks
  • First-aid / blister kit
  • Offline alerts screenshot + Emergency+

Optional kit searches: gear hub · park fees never affiliated.

Parking & access tips

  • One car, one loop of the sealed road — no Gym Beach detour.
  • Stenhouse jetty first; cape spurs are signed separately.
  • Pondalowie day-use only unless you booked a site.
  • Never park on dunes or vegetation.

Skip if short on time / energy

  • Gym Beach hike (separate road, ~4 hours)
  • Royston Head if the capes already ate the morning
  • Full Plaster Trail after a long cape loop
  • Every named beach on the west coast

Extra tips

Who this plan is for

  • First full day with a night nearby (best) or a very early Adelaide leave.
  • Groups who will accept one west-coast beach, not a beach scavenger hunt.

Live checks

  • Pondalowie surfers viewing platform: closed for storm damage (re-check Parks SA).
  • Feral bees: elevated activity posted park-wide at last re-check — care at camps.
  • Fire: solid-fuel bans apply in the listed seasonal window — verify CFS and Parks SA.

  • Cape Spencer Lighthouse WalkShort walk to Cape Spencer lighthouse and the Gulawulgawi Ngunda Nhagu lookout. Investigator Strait, Althorpe Islands, and Kangaroo Island on the horizon when the air is clear.
  • Pondalowie BoardwalkDune boardwalk down to Pondalowie Bay — the park’s main surf and fishing beach. Parks SA alert (published 11 June 2025, still listed 16 Aug 2026): the surfers viewing platform is closed due to storm damage. [VERIFY] live alerts before you go. No lifeguards.
