Things to do at Dhilba Guuranda-Innes

Most first visits revolve around Stenhouse Bay Lookout, with an optional Cape Spencer or Pondalowie stop if time and energy allow. Longer walks (Royston Head, Gym Beach Hike) and overnight camping are a different pace. Do not try to collect every beach on a first Adelaide day trip — and do not drive the internal park roads looking for Gym Beach.

Some stay, tour and gear links may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. Park vehicle entry, official Parks SA camping bookings and Inneston heritage lodges are never affiliated.

Day one rule

Pick one primary experience (usually Stenhouse Lookout). Do not collect every beach and light on a first same-day Adelaide reverse.

Weather / energy bail-out

Visitor Centre, jetty and short platforms beat a forced Royston or Gym Beach hike in heat, fire danger or hangry kids. Bail-outs are competence.

Access filter

Gym Beach is a different road. Pondalowie is unpatrolled water. Overnight circuit-style stacking is earned — not a first casual visit.

  1. 1

    Stenhouse Bay Lookout & jetty

Icon start · easy · families · orientation

The classic first hour: formed 2 km loop, nine lookouts, toilets and Visitor Centre nearby. A complete first visit can stop here (plus Cape Spencer if time allows) and still succeed.

  2. 2

Cape Spencer & West Cape lighthouses

Short loops · postcard · wind layer required

Two stainless-steel lights, Investigator Strait views, Gulawulgawi Ngunda Nhagu lookout, and winter whale scanning from cliffs. Short walks; wind is the limiter, not distance.

  3. 3

    Ethel shipwreck

Sand-dependent · look only · pair with capes

1904 iron barque on Ethel Beach. Visibility depends on sand levels — some years metal is clear, some years buried. Look only; do not climb the wreck.

  4. 4

    Pondalowie surfing, fishing & boardwalk

Unpatrolled · day stop or overnight · advanced water

Premier unpatrolled surf bay at the end of the sealed park road. Boardwalk through dunes, no lifeguards, real rips and freak-wave risk. Surfers viewing platform closed (storm damage — re-check Parks SA).

  5. 5

    Royston Head & west beaches

    Moderate walk · beach hops · heat-sensitive

Royston Head is the 4 km / 2 hr moderate walk in the west-beach cluster. Shell, Cable and Dolphin are stops on the main road — quieter alternatives when Pondalowie is packed. Little shade on Royston; carry water.

  6. 6

    Inneston historic township

Heritage · short or half-day · lodges official only

Gypsum ruins, Historic Walk, optional Plaster Trail, and official heritage lodges (bring linen). Quiet contrast to the surf coast — ruins are unstable; look from the path only.

  7. 7

Gym Beach (separate road) & long hike

Separate access · longest walk · plan deliberately

Not on the Stenhouse–Pondalowie internal network. Access via Corny Point / Gym Beach Road. The Gym Beach Hike is about 9.8 km / 4 hours — a dedicated plan, not a detour after Cape Spencer. Browns Beach is look-only, not a swim beach.

  8. 8

    Wildlife, stromatolites & Narungga culture

Year-round · dusk road caution · respect first

Emus and western greys on roads at dusk, reintroduced tammar wallabies, malleefowl, ospreys, hooded plovers on beaches, winter southern right whales from cliffs. Living stromatolites near the Visitor Centre. Self-guided Narungga sculptures — treat as culture, not props. Never feed wildlife; keep dogs out of the park.

  9. 9

Camping, lodges & Marion Bay base

Book official · fee split · peak weekends fill

Official Parks SA camping (Pondalowie, Stenhouse, Shell, Cable, Gym and more) and Inneston heritage lodges are separate products from day vehicle entry. Marion Bay is the commercial strip outside the gate — not a park campground. Book camping only on parks.sa.gov.au.
