Walks & lookouts
Guide updated · grades and open status change — verify Parks SA
Decide first: a short lookout loop, or a longer walk. Stenhouse Lookout plus Cape Spencer is enough for most first Adelaide day trips. Distances, grades and times below are planning ranges — always confirm on Parks SA and park alerts. Weather, closures and stair status change.
Decide before you lace up
- Easy lookouts: Stenhouse Bay Lookout, Cape Spencer, West Cape, Pondalowie Boardwalk, Inneston Historic — high reward, still real cliffs and unpatrolled beaches.
- Moderate walks: Royston Head (2 hours) or the Plaster Trail (3 hours) — carry water; heat is what slows you down.
- Long day: Gym Beach hike (~10 km / 4 hours) on its own access road — not stacked onto a Stenhouse + Pondalowie first day.
Doing two long walks plus the lookout loop on a first visit usually ends badly. Pick the table row that matches how you feel, then open the trail page for how to get there.

Quick comparison (planning only)
| Walk / lookout | Effort | Time | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Stenhouse Bay Lookout | easy | About 1 hour | First stop, families, wide coastal views, closest walk to toilets and the Visitor Centre |
| Royston Head | moderate | About 2 hours | Coastal lookout walk, wildlife chance, a real walk without a full Gym Beach day |
| Plaster Trail | moderate | About 3 hours | Gypsum-railway history, a longer walk with interpretive signs, car-shuffle option |
| Inneston Historic | easy | About 1 hour | Gypsum-town ruins, heritage lodges context, unstable-structure realism, families who want history without surf risk |
| West Cape / Barawarli | easy | About 30 minutes | West Cape lighthouse, a short stop after Ethel Beach |
| Cape Spencer / Gulawulgawi Ngunda Nhagu | easy | 20–40 minutes plus photo time | The park’s well-known lighthouse, Strait views, winter whales from cliffs |
| Pondalowie Boardwalk | easy | About 40 minutes | Surf-beach access, families on the sand (not in unpatrolled water), Pondalowie camp / caravan precinct |
| Gym Beach Hike | hard | About 4 hours | Dunes, mallee, orchids, birds — a full half-day when you accept the separate road |

Walks FAQ
Short answers before you stack too many walks into one Adelaide day. Official Parks SA pages win on grades and closures.
Tap a question to expand the answer.
What is the best first walk at Dhilba Guuranda-Innes?
Most first-timers start with the Stenhouse Bay Lookout Walk (about 2 km, nine lookouts) next to the Visitor Centre. Add Cape Spencer if you still have time. Royston Head is a solid two-hour walk. Gym Beach is a different road and a 4-hour walk — leave it off a first afternoon. Always verify with Parks SA.
Do I need a walk permit?
No walk permit is required for standard day walks. You do need a valid vehicle entry permit or pass (or a camping booking that includes it — confirm on the booking).
Can I walk to Gym Beach from Stenhouse or Pondalowie?
Not as a casual link. Gym Beach hike is the longest walk in the park and the campground sits on a completely separate access road via Corny Point / Gym Beach Road.
