Stenhouse Bay Lookout Walk

Short, high-reward cliff-top circuit from the Stenhouse Jetty car park near the Visitor Centre. Nine lookouts with interpretive signage — arguably the best coastal views in the park, over Investigator Strait and the offshore islands.

  • Easy formed cliff-top loop
  • About 1 hour
  • About 2 km loop
  • Effort: easy
  • Best for: First stop, families, wide coastal views, closest walk to toilets and the Visitor Centre

Distance, grade, time and open/closed status change — verify on the official Parks SA park and walks pages before you go.

Do not pair: Do not pair this first loop with the Gym Beach Hike (separate road, ~4 hours) on a same-day Adelaide reverse.

Turnaround: Any lookout is a legitimate finish. If wind, kids or fog blank the Strait, stop. Official vs sign: Parks SA walks PDF for planning; the path and any closed fencing on the day win.

  • Treating Stenhouse as a five-minute photo and driving west without toilets, water or a leave-time for the Adelaide reverse.
  • Leaving the formed path for a cliff-edge photo, then discovering wind and slumping are the actual product.

Where you start

Stenhouse Jetty car park

This is the closest walk to services in the park. You start at the signed jetty / Visitor Centre precinct at Stenhouse Bay — not a remote trailhead. Toilets and the Visitor Information Centre sit nearby when they are open.

How to get there

  1. Drive to the single main park entrance near Marion Bay / Stenhouse Bay (about 3–3.5 hours from Adelaide via Port Wakefield, Ardrossan, Minlaton and Warooka). Pay the vehicle entry permit before you enter — online ahead of arrival is smarter than the on-site terminal.
  2. Follow the sealed park road to Stenhouse Bay. Park at the jetty car park beside the Visitor Centre precinct.
  3. There is no public transport into the park. Do not try to reach Gym Beach from this road network — Gym Beach has its own access via Corny Point / Gym Beach Road.
  4. Do not leave bags visible in cars at the jetty or lookout parks.

How to do it (step by step)

  1. Use toilets at Stenhouse Bay if they are open, fill water, and put on a wind layer — cliff tops are cooler and windier than the car.
  2. Walk the formed loop through low closed coastal heath. Interpretive signs cover natural and cultural history; stay on the path.
  3. Walk the nine lookouts at an easy pace. Investigator Strait, Althorpe Islands and (on a clear day) Kangaroo Island are the reward.
  4. Bail out at any lookout — this is an entirely short walk. Turn around whenever wind, energy or kids say so.
  5. If everyone still has energy: a jetty stroll, a short drive to Cape Spencer, or the stromatolites near the Visitor Centre.

What to expect

This is a short formed loop through coastal heath, not a long bushwalk. For two kilometres you get nine lookouts, interpretive signs, and a clear view of Investigator Strait — which is why most people start here.

It is also the only walk next to the Visitor Centre, jetty and toilets. If the centre is open, staff can often tell you whether the Ethel wreck is showing. Do this before you drive west to Pondalowie, not as an afterthought.

Mixed-ability groups succeed here because bail-outs are every lookout. A complete first Adelaide day can stop after this loop and Cape Spencer and still count as a success.

Day shape and logistics

Park at the jetty car park. The loop starts and finishes here. You do not need a second car, a shuttle, or a permit beyond the park vehicle entry (or a camping booking that includes it — confirm on the booking).

A calm first-visit morning is: pay/confirm your vehicle permit, Visitor Centre if it is open, this loop, then decide whether Cape Spencer, Ethel Beach or Pondalowie still fits the clock. Do not stack Gym Beach on the same first morning — that is a different road.

Bail-outs are trivial. Every lookout is a legitimate turnaround. Closest services in the park sit at the start. Set a leave-time if you are reverse-driving to Adelaide the same day.

Hazards that actually apply

Cliff edges and slumping ground. Stay on the formed path. Do not climb or fish from rocks below this walk for a better photo.

Wind. A mild Adelaide day is often a lean-into-it day on these cliffs. Hold children. Hats need a chin strap.

Heat and UV on the heath in summer — there is almost no shade. Carry water even though the loop is short.

Mobile coverage is patchy in the park. 000 needs reception. Download Emergency+ before you leave Marion Bay or Adelaide.

What to pair — and what not to

Strong pairs: Cape Spencer lighthouse (short drive), Ethel Beach if sand levels have exposed the wreck, the stromatolites, or a Stenhouse Bay camp night.

A weak first half-day: this loop plus Pondalowie plus the Gym Beach hike (separate road, 4 hours). After Stenhouse, pick one extra stop, not three.

Two failure modes that ruin this walk: (1) skipping it for “the real beaches” then getting lost looking for Gym Beach on the internal road; (2) treating unfenced cliff as a photo studio. Official walks PDF is planning; the formed path and on-site signs are the day.

Extra tips

  • Best first walk in the park — do it before you drive west to Pondalowie so you have the orientation.
  • Winter swell and whale season (southern right whales from the cliffs) can be spectacular; summer is hotter and busier.
  • Visitor Centre is listed open 10am–3pm seven days — re-check hours if you need the desk. Better first light than dusk for a first visit.
  • Screenshot the official walks PDF on home Wi-Fi — coverage inside the park is patchy.
  • If fog blanks the Strait, keep the loop short and save energy for Inneston or a Marion Bay reset.

Often paired with Cape Spencer / Gulawulgawi Ngunda Nhagu— only if energy and weather allow.
