Family easy day: jetty, lookouts, stromatolites

3–5 hours on the groundBest for: Mixed ages, prams on formed paths, first Yorke Peninsula national-park day

Stay near Stenhouse: Visitor Centre, stromatolites, Lookout Walk, jetty. Skip remote rock ledges and Gym Beach.

Kids remember the jetty, the emus on the road, and one good lookout. They do not need every beach on the map.

Hold children at cliff platforms. Wind and drop-offs are the hazard class — not distance.

If anyone is hangry, snack at the car before Cape Spencer. Skip wreck-rock climbing entirely.

Track status, fees, fire bans and weather change — verify on Parks SA and CFS before you leave, then use the timeline below as a planning skeleton only. Vehicle entry, camping and lodges are separate official products.

Timeline

  1. Arrive Stenhouse

    Toilets, snacks, wind layer

Park at the jetty. Use toilets. Put hats and layers on before the first lookout. Pay/confirm vehicle entry if not already done.

  2. Morning

Visitor Centre + stromatolites + lookout

Visitor Centre if open (10am–3pm listed — re-check). Short stromatolite stop. Stenhouse Lookout Walk on formed paths. Bail out at any lookout.

  3. If still happy

    Cape Spencer lookout only

Short lighthouse stop. No Ethel wreck climbing. No Pondalowie “just a quick swim” on unpatrolled water unless adults already accept that risk class honestly.

  4. Leave

    Emus, fuel, reverse clock

Slow for wildlife on park roads. Fuel at Marion Bay if needed. Same-day Adelaide return needs a real leave time — do not start Royston “because the kids are still going.”

  • Sun hats
  • SPF50
  • Wind layer for kids and adults

Parking & access tips

  • Stenhouse jetty park. Shade is scarce — use the car between stops.
  • Do not invent cliff parking for “better photo access.”
  • Keep valuables out of sight.

Skip if short on time / energy

  • Royston Head
  • Plaster Trail
  • Pondalowie surf for non-swimmers
  • Gym Beach
  • Any “just climb the wreck” idea

Extra tips

Family filters

  • One formed loop beats three rushed stops.
  • Snack discipline prevents cliff meltdowns.
  • Emus and kangaroos on roads — slow down; never feed wildlife.
