Thomson-Pfitzner Plaster Trail

Follows the old wooden gypsum railway from Inneston (past the horse-stable ruins on the Historic Walk) to Stenhouse Bay. Interpretive signage. Can be walked one-way with a car shuffle from either end.

  • Moderate heritage return (or one-way with a shuffle)
  • About 3 hours
  • About 7.6 km return
  • Effort: moderate
  • Best for: Gypsum-railway history, a longer walk with interpretive signs, car-shuffle option

Distance, grade, time and open/closed status change — verify on the official Parks SA park and walks pages before you go.

Do not pair: Do not stack the full Plaster Trail after Gym Beach or after a full Pondalowie surf session.

Turnaround: Turn around when water or heat says so. One-way only if you already have a car at the other end. Official PDF for length; on-site ruins fencing wins.

  • Treating the railway alignment as a short stroll after Pondalowie surf with empty bottles.
  • Climbing unstable ruins for photos instead of reading the signs.

Where you start

Inneston Historic Township or Stenhouse Bay

Accessible from either the Inneston or Stenhouse end. The Inneston end sits among unstable ruins — stay on the signed track and treat structures as look-don’t-touch.

How to get there

  1. Inneston is a short drive from Stenhouse Bay on the internal park road (2WD when dry).
  2. For a one-way walk, leave a car at Stenhouse Bay and start at Inneston (or the reverse). Confirm both car parks before you commit.
  3. Without two cars, walk out-and-back from one end and turn around at a signed point — do not assume a hitch back.
  4. Do not treat lodge driveways as public parking.

How to do it (step by step)

  1. Read the unstable-structures signs at Inneston before you start.
  2. Follow the old railway alignment and interpretive signs toward Stenhouse (or the reverse).
  3. Carry water for a 3-hour exposed walk. There is little shade.
  4. Turn around with time for the reverse if you are out-and-back — 7.6 km return is a planning figure, not a race.
  5. If you only want ruins, do the 2 km Inneston Historic Walk instead of the full Plaster Trail.

What to expect

This is the park’s heritage long walk: gypsum, timber rail, and the story of how plaster left Inneston for Stenhouse Bay. It is a moderate 7.6 km return (or a one-way with a shuffle), not a cliff lookout loop.

Interpretive signs do the history heavy lifting. Your job is water, heat discipline and staying off ruins.

If ruins plus a short walk is the goal, do the Inneston Historic Walk and skip the full railway. You can always come back with better heat windows.

Logistics and car shuffles

You can start at either end. Two cars make a one-way walk easy; with one car, go out and back and turn around in time. Confirm both car parks before you commit to a shuffle.

Start at Inneston if you want the ruins first; start at Stenhouse if you want to finish at the Visitor Centre and jetty with toilets nearby.

This is still a park day-walk under vehicle entry rules. Overnight lodge guests do not get a private railway — same track, same heat.

Hazards

Unstable historic structures at Inneston. Look from the path. Do not enter, climb or lean on ruins for photos.

Exposure and length. Three hours of heath and railway alignment in January without shade is a different product from a cool winter morning.

Snakes in warm months. Stay on the formed track; do not short-cut through long grass.

What to pair

Strong pair: Inneston Historic Walk first (short ruins loop), then decide whether the full Plaster Trail still fits energy and water.

Weak pair: Plaster Trail after a morning of Pondalowie surfing and Royston Head. That is a full day of different hazard classes stacked for no good reason.

Extra tips

  • Strong pair with the Inneston Historic Walk if you have a heritage-focused day.
  • Summer heat makes this a morning walk, not a midday one.
  • One-way with a shuffle finishes at services if you end at Stenhouse — useful for families.
  • Screenshot the walks PDF; do not invent shortcuts through ruins or heath.

Often paired with Inneston Historic— only if energy and weather allow.
