Two lights, one driving loop
Cape Spencer and West Cape are nearby but separate short walks. Budget photo time and wind, not distance. The stainless-steel towers are working navigation aids — look from the paths, do not climb.
Cape Spencer is the classic first lighthouse stop after Stenhouse. Gulawulgawi Ngunda Nhagu lookout is the cultural and visual payoff on clear days. West Cape / Barawarli is the short loop when you still have energy.
On clear days the horizon can pick up Althorpe Islands and sometimes the distant mass of Kangaroo Island. Treat that as a bonus, not a guarantee — spray and haze win often.
The Ethel
The iron barque Ethel ran aground in 1904. Some years you see a lot of wreck metal; some years sand covers almost everything. Leave the metal alone — do not climb it for photos.
Ask at the Visitor Centre for recent sand reports if you care deeply about wreck visibility. If the metal is buried, the beach and cliffs are still a real stop.

Wind, whales and when to skip
Winter swell and cooler air make the capes a whale-scanning platform when southern right whales are moving. Summer heat is manageable for short loops if you bring water and a hat — the walks are not long, the wind is.
If fog has erased the Strait, keep the visit short and save energy for Stenhouse or Inneston. The postcard is optional; the reverse drive is not.
How the capes fit a wider day
Best order for most people: Stenhouse orientation → Cape Spencer → Ethel if sand/time allow → West Cape optional → one west-coast beach later, not every beach.
Do not stack Royston Head, Pondalowie surf and Gym Beach onto the same first half-day as both lights. That is how groups arrive back at Marion Bay exhausted and snappy.

Highlights
- Cape Spencer lighthouse and Gulawulgawi Ngunda Nhagu lookout
- West Cape / Barawarli lighthouse loop (about 1 km)
- Ethel wreck — visibility depends on sand levels
- Althorpe Islands / Kangaroo Island horizon on clear days
- Winter southern right whale scanning from cliffs
Practical tips
- Wind layer even in summer — headlands amplify everything.
- Winter: scan for whales from formed lookouts, not unfenced edges.
- Check wreck sand levels at the Visitor Centre if it matters to you.
- No reliable drinking water at the cape car parks — carry your own.
- Stay on formed paths; heath recovers slowly from shortcutting.
Facilities & services
- Signed car parks at Cape Spencer and West Cape
- Short formed paths and lookouts
- Ethel Beach access (conditions vary)
- No reliable water or toilets at every spur — plan from Stenhouse

FAQ
FAQ — The capes
Short answers for planning. Official alerts, fees and walk status always win over any blog — including this one.
Tap a question to expand the answer.
Will I see the Ethel wreck?
Only if sand levels have left metal visible. Ask at the Visitor Centre or accept that the beach alone is still worth the stop.
Can I climb the lighthouse?
No. Treat the towers as working navigation aids. Stay on public paths and lookouts.
Is Cape Spencer suitable for kids?
Yes for short formed lookouts if you hold children near edges and accept wind. It is not a playground. Skip wreck-rock climbing entirely.
