Half-day: Stenhouse Bay & Cape Spencer
Guide updated · verify Parks SA the morning you go
Pay the vehicle permit, Visitor Centre if open, Stenhouse Bay Lookout Walk, then Cape Spencer and Ethel Beach if sand has left wreck metal showing — without pretending you can also do Gym Beach.

From Adelaide this is still a full calendar day once you count 3–3.5 hours each way. One good lookout loop and a set leave-time beats racing around every beach.
Treat this as a reverse-clock mission: decide the leave time before you enter the park. Do not invent Pondalowie, Royston and Gym Beach onto the same half-day.
Always check Parks SA alerts, fire status and CFS the morning you leave. This itinerary is planning guidance only — not live status.
Track status, fees, fire bans and weather change — verify on Parks SA and CFS before you leave, then use the timeline below as a planning skeleton only. Vehicle entry, camping and lodges are separate official products.

Timeline
Night before
Pay entry and decide when you leave
Book or pay vehicle entry online ($14.40/vehicle listed 16 Aug 2026 — re-check). Download Emergency+ and offline maps. Say the plan out loud: Stenhouse Lookout is the product; Cape Spencer / Ethel are optional extras. Leave Gym Beach for another day. Pack water, hat, wind layer, snacks.
Depart Adelaide
3–3.5 hours via Port Wakefield → Warooka
Fuel at Warooka or Marion Bay before you are tired. No public transport into the park. Screenshot Parks SA alerts and the walks PDF on home Wi-Fi — coverage inside the park is patchy.
Arrive Stenhouse
Centre, toilets, lookout loop
Park at the jetty car park. Visitor Centre listed 10am–3pm seven days (Parks SA — re-check). Walk the 2 km Lookout Walk (nine lookouts). Stay on the formed path. Hold children at platforms.
If you still have time
Cape Spencer + Ethel
Short drive to Cape Spencer lighthouse / Gulawulgawi Ngunda Nhagu lookout. Ethel Beach only if daylight remains and you want the wreck (sand-dependent — do not climb metal). Skip West Cape if the wind has already won.
Leave
Leave time for the drive home
Do not start Pondalowie or Royston after 2pm on a same-day Adelaide return. Fuel at Marion Bay / Warooka before you are tired. Swap drivers if two licensed adults are available.
Packing
- Sun hat + SPF50
- Wind shell (cliff tops are windier than Adelaide)
- 1–2 L water per person
- Snacks that survive a warm car
- Closed shoes with grip
- Offline maps + Emergency+ installed
- Power bank
Optional kit searches: gear hub · park fees never affiliated.
Parking & access tips
- Park at the Stenhouse jetty car park. Do not invent cliff-edge bays.
- Peak weekends fill the obvious bays; arrive earlier rather than circling.
- Do not leave bags visible in cars.
- Cape Spencer and Ethel have their own signed spurs — read signs, do not block loops.
Skip if short on time / energy
- Pondalowie
- Royston Head
- Gym Beach (separate road + long hike)
- Inneston Plaster Trail
- West Cape if wind or clock is already tight
Extra tips
Who this plan is for
- First-timers from Adelaide with a real reverse clock.
- Families who want formed paths and toilets nearby.
- Anyone tempted to “do the whole park” in four hours — this is the honest alternative.
Fees (do not merge these)
- Day vehicle entry is one payment — Parks SA lists $14.40/vehicle (checked 16 Aug 2026).
- Camping is a separate booking (from $27.50/night listed).
- Inneston lodges are a third official product — linen often guest-supplied.
- Free coastal-park entry ended at Easter 2026.

- Cape Spencer Lighthouse WalkShort walk to Cape Spencer lighthouse and the Gulawulgawi Ngunda Nhagu lookout. Investigator Strait, Althorpe Islands, and Kangaroo Island on the horizon when the air is clear.
