Why most people start at Stenhouse

Arrive at Stenhouse Bay, not at a random west-coast beach. This is the sealed entrance, the Visitor Centre, the jetty, the stromatolites, and the lookout loop that shows you the Strait in an hour. It is the place to pay your mental map: toilets, water plan, wind check, and a leave-time if you are reverse-driving to Adelaide the same day.

The park was renamed Dhilba Guuranda-Innes in November 2020 in recognition of co-management with Narungga traditional owners. Dhilba is the southern Narungga clan group; Guuranda means southern land. Pronunciation is roughly Dil-pa Koor-ran-da. Treat cultural sculptures and stories around the park as living culture, not props.

Marion Bay sits immediately outside the main entrance. It is the closest commercial stay strip — fuel, food and beds — not a Parks SA campground. If you need a roof without a park booking, base here and day-trip in.

Lookout Walk and the jetty

The 2 km Lookout Walk is the easiest walk that still feels like the park. Nine lookouts, a formed heath track, toilets nearby. Pair it with a jetty stroll if the wind allows. Hold children at cliff platforms — the edge is the product, not a photo backdrop you step past.

Winter cliffs are a southern right whale watch point when the season is right. Summer is heat, flies and more Adelaide day-trippers. Fog and spray can blank the Strait even when Adelaide CBD is clear — still a successful first stop.

If energy remains and you still have daylight, Cape Spencer is the natural second stop. Do not invent a hybrid that also “just pops into” Gym Beach before lunch.

Fees at the gate (split systems)

Day vehicle entry is one system. Camping is another. Heritage lodges are a third. Parks SA lists day entry at $14.40 per vehicle (checked 16 Aug 2026) — re-check live. Multi-park and single-park vehicle passes are valid for day entry; they do not replace a camping booking.

Pay online before you leave Adelaide when you can. The on-site pay terminal is card-only and can crawl when mobile data is weak. On-the-spot fines apply if you skip entry.

Overnight bookings often include vehicle entry for the stay — confirm on the specific Parks SA booking page for your dates. Never affiliate-book park camping or vehicle entry on this site.

Comms, fire and leave-time

Coverage inside the park is patchy. Download Emergency+, offline maps and a screenshot of Parks SA alerts and the walks PDF on home Wi-Fi. Triple Zero needs a signal — plan for that, do not invent one.

Fire and heat dominate the summer half of the year. Parks SA’s 2025–26 list bans wood/solid-fuel fires in this park from 22 Nov 2025 to 1 Apr 2026 (re-check each season). Gas is usually OK except on Total Fire Ban days. No firewood collection. Check CFS before you leave.

From Adelaide this is still a full calendar day once you count 3–3.5 hours each way. Set a leave-time at Stenhouse if you are not camping — do not start Pondalowie or Royston after 2pm on a same-day reverse.

FAQ — Stenhouse Bay

Short answers for planning. Official alerts, fees and walk status always win over any blog — including this one.

Is there public transport to Stenhouse Bay?

No. The park is private vehicle only. There is no ferry or bus into the park. Plan the full Adelaide drive or stay on Yorke Peninsula overnight.

Can I walk to Gym Beach from Stenhouse?

Not as a casual link. Gym Beach is a separate road and a long hike. Do not treat the internal park roads as a way to Gym Beach.

Do I need a ticket as well as a vehicle pass?

Day visitors pay vehicle entry (or show a valid Parks SA vehicle pass). There is no separate walk ticket. Camping and lodges are extra official bookings.

Is Marion Bay inside the park?

No. Marion Bay sits immediately outside the main entrance — closest commercial stay town, not a park campground.
