What Inneston is
Inneston is the inland half of the park: gypsum, plaster, the old timber rail, and a township that emptied into ruins and a handful of restored lodges. It is a short 2WD drive from Stenhouse, not a 4WD-only corner and not a surf stop.
If you want a morning that is about industrial history rather than cliffs and swell, this is the area. Pair the Historic Walk with Stenhouse Lookout for an easy heritage-and-cliffs first day.
Read the on-site interpretation and official Parks SA material for mining history. This guide is orientation and logistics, not a heritage inventory.
Historic Walk vs Plaster Trail
The Inneston Historic Walk is the short ruins circuit — about 2 km — and the right first choice for most visitors. Stay on formed paths; treat every structure as unstable.
The Thomson-Pfitzner Plaster Trail is the longer commitment: 7.6 km return between Inneston and Stenhouse along the old railway corridor. Car-shuffle only if you have two cars and a clear finish time. Heat and wind on exposed track are the usual cut-offs, not distance alone.
If ruins plus a short walk is the goal, do the Historic Walk and skip the full railway. You can always come back with better heat windows.
Heritage lodges vs camping
Lodges are a separate official fee and booking from both vehicle entry and campgrounds. Solar/gas, self-contained, minimum stays can apply. Bring your own linen — people still forget this and then resent the trip.
Book only on parks.sa.gov.au. Never book them through a stay affiliate on this site. Screenshot the confirmation before you lose signal.
Camping is still the other overnight product — Stenhouse, Pondalowie, Shell Beach, Cable Bay, Gym Beach and related sites are all official Parks SA accommodation, not free pull-offs.
How Inneston fits a wider day
Inneston works as a midday cool-down when the coast is howling, or as an overnight base when you want stars without a tent. It does not replace Stenhouse orientation or a deliberate Gym Beach drive.
On a second day after Pondalowie camp, the Historic Walk or Plaster Trail is a cleaner “one moderate walk” goal than stacking every beach on the map.
