West Cape Headland Hike

Short loop to the West Cape (Barawarli) stainless-steel lighthouse and headland views. About 30 minutes, not a half-day.

  • Easy 1 km headland loop
  • About 30 minutes
  • About 1 km loop
  • Effort: easy
  • Best for: West Cape lighthouse, a short stop after Ethel Beach

Distance, grade, time and open/closed status change — verify on the official Parks SA park and walks pages before you go.

Do not pair: Do not skip Stenhouse and treat West Cape as the whole first-visit product.

Turnaround: The lighthouse loop is already short — finish or abort at the car. On-site path wins over blogs.

  • Leaving the loop through fragile vegetation for a “better lighthouse shot.”
  • Using West Cape as a substitute for Stenhouse orientation on a first visit.

Where you start

West Cape car park

Signed headland car park on the Cape Spencer / West Cape access. Short formed loop.

How to get there

  1. From the main park road, take the signed Cape Spencer / West Cape / Ethel Beach access.
  2. West Cape and Cape Spencer are nearby but separate short stops — do not assume one car park serves both lighthouses.
  3. Combine after Ethel Beach or Cape Spencer when you still have wind tolerance, not when the group is already done.

How to do it (step by step)

  1. Park at the signed West Cape car park only.
  2. Walk the about 1 km loop to the lighthouse and lookout. Stay on formed path.
  3. Do not climb the light structure or fences.
  4. Pair with Ethel Beach (wreck visibility depends on sand levels) and/or Cape Spencer.
  5. Leave when the wind wins — this is a short stop, not a place to dig in.

What to expect

West Cape / Barawarli is the short stainless-steel light stop that people forget until they are already on the cape access road. About 1 km and 30 minutes. The product is headland air and a working light — not a multi-hour hike.

It pairs naturally with Cape Spencer and Ethel Beach on the same spur of driving. Treat it as the third short stop, not a replacement for Stenhouse orientation.

Logistics

Separate signed car park from Cape Spencer. Do not invent a shared parking fantasy that blocks others.

No reliable water or toilets at every spur — plan services from Stenhouse Bay.

On a full-day icons plan, budget photo time and wind, not distance. The Adelaide reverse still owns the clock if you are not camping.

Hazards

Cliff edges and wind. Short loops still remove people who climb for “one better photo.”

Nearby beaches are unpatrolled. Ethel Beach wreck steel and rock ledges are not playgrounds.

Order of stops

Best order for most people: Stenhouse → Cape Spencer → Ethel (if sand/time) → West Cape optional → one west-coast beach later.

Skip West Cape entirely if the group is cold, tired or the fog has erased the Strait. Competence includes stopping.

Extra tips

  • Clear days give Althorpe Islands and Investigator Strait.
  • Wind is the problem here, not the distance.
  • After Ethel Beach sand time, this is a clean five-minute drive reset.
  • Winter whale scanning is better from formed lookouts than from unfenced edges.

Often paired with Cape Spencer / Gulawulgawi Ngunda Nhagu— only if energy and weather allow.
