Camping is a separate Parks SA booking from vehicle entry. Accommodation listed from $27.50/night (checked 16 Aug 2026) — re-check. Entry can often be included when you book overnight online — confirm on the booking, do not assume.

Wood/solid-fuel fires: Parks SA 2025–26 list bans them in this park 22 Nov 2025 – 1 Apr 2026. Gas usually OK except Total Fire Ban days. No firewood collection.

Do not arrive after dark to an unfamiliar camp if you can avoid it. Screenshot the booking and alerts on home Wi-Fi.

Track status, fees, fire bans and weather change — verify on Parks SA and CFS before you leave, then use the timeline below as a planning skeleton only. Vehicle entry, camping and lodges are separate official products.

Timeline

  1. Before you leave

Book the site and pay entry rules

parks.sa.gov.au accommodation page only — never affiliate channels for park camping. Screenshot the booking. Download Emergency+. Pack gas cooker if you need a stove under solid-fuel bans.

  2. Day 1 morning–afternoon

    Stenhouse + capes, then camp

Orient at Stenhouse Lookout, optional Cape Spencer. Arrive at Pondalowie with daylight. Park only on your booked site. Boardwalk to the bay; no lifeguards. Early dinner — feral bee alert care at camps (re-check).

  3. Day 2

    One moderate walk

Royston Head (~4 km / 2 hr) or Inneston Historic + optional Plaster Trail. Not Gym Beach unless you booked Gym Beach camp and drove the separate road on purpose. Fuel at Marion Bay on the way out.

  4. Exit

    Leave clean and on time

Pack out rubbish. Do not collect firewood. If you are reverse-driving to Adelaide, leave before fatigue owns the highway.

Packing

  • Gas cooker (if solid fuel banned)
  • Headlamp
  • Warm layer for night wind
  • 2 L+ water capacity
  • First-aid kit
  • Booking + alert screenshots offline
  • Optional sat messenger if remote/overnight

Optional kit searches: gear hub · park fees never affiliated.

Parking & access tips

  • Park only on your booked site. Day-use cars use day-use parks.
  • Do not invent extra cars on someone else’s pad — space is part of the booking culture.
  • Casuarina is a nearby official option if Pondalowie pads are full — still book official only.

Skip if short on time / energy

  • Gym Beach unless you booked Gym Beach camp and drove the separate road on purpose
  • Stacking Royston + full Plaster Trail + Ethel wreck-rock time on day 2
  • Arrive-after-dark first nights when you do not know the pad

Extra tips

Who this plan is for

  • People who want stars and a second day without the Adelaide reverse pressure.
  • Surfers or walkers with a real Parks SA booking already in hand.

Fee and fire honesty

  • Vehicle entry, camping and lodges are three systems.
  • Solid-fuel ban window is seasonal — re-check the Parks SA fire PDF each year.
  • Feral bees elevated at last re-check — care at camps.

  • Pondalowie BoardwalkDune boardwalk down to Pondalowie Bay — the park’s main surf and fishing beach. Parks SA alert (published 11 June 2025, still listed 16 Aug 2026): the surfers viewing platform is closed due to storm damage. [VERIFY] live alerts before you go. No lifeguards.
  • Royston Head HikeOut-and-back from the Royston Head Hike car park on the Dolphin Beach road (Parks SA: 4 km / 2 hours return). Mostly flat with some rocky sections to a cliff lookout — rough water, a quieter beach below, and a decent chance of kangaroos, emus and birds.
  • Inneston Historic WalkShort loop through the historic Inneston gypsum-mining township — ruins, interpretive signage, and a hard stay-off-the-structures rule. Heritage lodges (Engineers, Gatehouse, Mallee, Managers, Norfolk and others) are booked only through Parks SA and usually need you to bring linen.
