People come here to surf Pondalowie. Plan around rips, freak waves and no patrols — they are the main fact, not a side note.

Parks SA still lists the surfers viewing platform closed for storm damage at last re-check — stay off closed infrastructure.

If the group includes learners, pick a different beach culture elsewhere. This park page is not a surf school.

Track status, fees, fire bans and weather change — verify on Parks SA and CFS before you leave, then use the timeline below as a planning skeleton only. Vehicle entry, camping and lodges are separate official products.

Timeline

  1. Morning check

    Swell, wind, fire danger

If it is a Total Fire Ban or Catastrophic day, the park can close. [VERIFY] CFS and Parks SA. Check swell from a source you trust — this site is not a surf forecast. Screenshot alerts on Wi-Fi.

  2. Access

    Boardwalk only through the dunes

Stay on the boardwalk to reach the beach. Never climb remote rocks to “find a peak.” Day-use parking only unless you booked a Pondalowie site.

  3. On the water

    Unpatrolled rules

No lifeguards. Never alone. Know your exit. If conditions look wrong, the sand and boardwalk still count as a successful west-coast stop — do not invent courage for photos.

  4. Leave / camp

    Fuel and honesty

Same-day reverse: leave with daylight margin. Overnight: official booking only. Care for feral bee alert at camps. No firewood collection.

Skip if short on time / energy

  • Trying to surf Browns or Gym as an extra stop
  • Learn-to-surf groups without a safe alternative plan
  • Closed platform access “just for a look”

Extra tips

Who this plan is for

  • Competent surfers who already understand unpatrolled open-coast risk.
  • Not for first-time learners, school groups, or “we’ll just have a splash” families.
