First time at Dhilba Guuranda-Innes: a realistic plan

Dhilba Guuranda-Innes (formerly Innes National Park) sits at the south-western tip of Yorke Peninsula. The dual name, from November 2020, recognises co-management with Narungga traditional owners. Dhilba is the southern clan group; Guuranda means southern land. Pronunciation is roughly Dil-pa Koor-ran-da.

Most first visits fail the same way: people treat the park like a city attraction list, stack Stenhouse, every cape, Pondalowie and Gym Beach onto one Adelaide reverse, and arrive home exhausted and snappy. The fix is boring and works — pick one primary experience, set a leave-time, and verify Parks SA the morning you go.

This guide is unofficial. For fees, fire, closures and bookings use Parks SA only. Planning figures below are orientation, not live status.

What you are actually signing up for

Innes is a sealed cul-de-sac from Stenhouse Bay west to Pondalowie, with short signed spurs to Cape Spencer, Ethel Beach, West Cape, Shell Beach, Cable Bay, Dolphin Beach and Royston Head. Inneston sits inland on that network. Marion Bay is the commercial strip outside the gate.

There is no ferry, no park shuttle and no public bus into the tip. The “product” is cliffs, heath, two stainless-steel lights, an optional wreck beach, unpatrolled surf and a gypsum ghost town — not a café strip.

If your group’s fittest adult is already describing the day as “we’ll just see everything,” re-check the reverse clock and the energy of the weakest person who still has to walk back to the car.

Drive and arrival

Typical planning route: Port Wakefield → Ardrossan → Minlaton → Warooka → Marion Bay / Stenhouse Bay. Parks SA lists about 300 km from Adelaide — plan roughly 3–3.5 hours each way depending on traffic and stops.

Fuel before the tip. The entire main internal network is 2WD when dry; after rain, treat soft sections carefully and follow any Parks SA road advice.

Pay vehicle entry online ahead when you can. The on-site terminal is card-only and can crawl when mobile data is weak. On-the-spot fines apply if you skip entry.

The three fee systems people merge by accident

Day vehicle entry is one official product. Camping is another. Inneston heritage lodges are a third. Multi-park and single-park vehicle passes can cover day entry — they do not automatically replace a camping booking.

Parks SA lists day entry at $14.40 per vehicle and accommodation from $27.50/night (checked 16 Aug 2026) — re-check live. Free coastal-park entry under the Algal Bloom Summer Plan ended at Easter 2026.

Overnight bookings often include vehicle entry for the stay — confirm on the specific booking page. Never affiliate-book park camping or vehicle entry on this site.

Start at Stenhouse — always

Stenhouse Bay is the sealed entrance, Visitor Centre (listed 10am–3pm seven days — re-check), jetty, stromatolites, toilets and the 2 km Lookout Walk with nine lookouts. That loop is the highest-success first hour in the park.

A calm first-visit morning: confirm entry → toilets → Visitor Centre if open → Lookout Walk → decide whether Cape Spencer or Ethel still fits the clock. Do not invent Pondalowie, Royston and Gym Beach onto the same first half-day.

The Gym Beach trap

Gym Beach campground and that access sit on Gym Beach Road off Marion Bay Road via Corny Point. The internal Stenhouse–Pondalowie roads do not get you there. People burn hours discovering this the hard way.

The Gym Beach Hike is about 9.8 km return / 4 hours (Parks SA). It is a dedicated plan, not a detour after Cape Spencer. Browns Beach is a rough look-only stop, not a family swim beach.

If Gym Beach is the goal, drive there deliberately with daylight or an overnight booking. Do not “fit it in” after Stenhouse on a same-day Adelaide reverse.

Communications, fire and leave-time

Coverage is patchy, especially in low-lying areas. We do not publish carrier maps. Download Emergency+, offline maps and screenshots of Parks SA alerts and the walks PDF on home Wi-Fi. Triple Zero needs a signal.

Fire and heat dominate the summer half of the year. Parks SA’s 2025–26 list bans wood/solid-fuel fires in this park from 22 Nov 2025 to 1 Apr 2026 (re-check each season). Gas is usually OK except Total Fire Ban days. No firewood collection. Check CFS before you leave.

From Adelaide this is still a full calendar day once you count the drive. Set a leave-time at Stenhouse if you are not camping. Do not start Pondalowie or Royston after 2pm on a same-day reverse.

Failure modes worth saying out loud

Late Adelaide leave → short ground time → rushed reverse → tired drivers. Fix: earlier alarm or overnight in Marion Bay.

“We’ll do Stenhouse, all the lights, Pondalowie and Gym Beach” → map-reading fight at 3pm. Fix: one primary + one optional.

Assuming free entry still applies → fine or terminal queue. Fix: pay/confirm current fees on Parks SA.

Relying on continuous mobile coverage → no alerts, no maps, no 000. Fix: Emergency+ and offline screenshots before Marion Bay.

FAQ

Tap a question to expand the answer.

Do I need a ticket as well as a vehicle pass?

Day visitors pay vehicle entry (or show a valid Parks SA vehicle pass). Parks SA lists $14.40 per vehicle (checked 16 Aug 2026) — re-check live. There is no separate walk ticket. Camping and lodges are extra official bookings.

Is Marion Bay inside the park?

Marion Bay sits immediately outside the main entrance — it is the closest commercial stay town, not a park campground.

Can I do Gym Beach on the same first afternoon as Stenhouse?

Usually no. Gym Beach is a separate road via Corny Point / Gym Beach Road, and the hike is about 9.8 km / 4 hours. Treat it as its own plan.

Is there public transport?

No. Private vehicle only. Plan the full Adelaide drive or stay overnight on Yorke Peninsula.
