Camping and heritage lodges: book official, never mix the fees

How Parks SA camping at Pondalowie, Stenhouse, Shell Beach, Cable Bay and Gym Beach sits apart from vehicle entry and Inneston heritage lodges.

Unofficial guide — always verify track conditions, closures, fees and safety with Parks SA. Place photos are Wikimedia Commons / CC where credited — not official Parks SA imagery and not live conditions.

Some stay, tour and gear links may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. Park vehicle entry, official Parks SA camping bookings and Inneston heritage lodges are never affiliated.

Google “innes national park camping booking” for a reason: people mix day-entry and overnight. They are different products. Day vehicle entry does not invent a free tent site. A lodge booking is not a campground pad.

Peak pressure hits Christmas/New Year, Easter, the October long weekend and school holidays. Walk-up hope is not a plan. Screenshot confirmations on home Wi-Fi — coverage inside the park is patchy.

This article is unofficial. Booking rules, prices and site availability change. Parks SA is the authority.

The three products people confuse

Day vehicle entry is one official payment (or a valid vehicle pass). Camping is a separate Parks SA accommodation booking. Inneston heritage lodges are a third official product with their own fees, minimum stays and linen expectations.

Merging them into one “park fee” is how people arrive under-booked or over-confident. Read the live booking page for your dates — not last year’s comment thread.

Parks SA lists day entry at $14.40 per vehicle and accommodation from $27.50/night (checked 16 Aug 2026). Re-check live. Free coastal entry ended at Easter 2026.

Campgrounds on the main network

Stenhouse Bay sits near the jetty — useful if you want toilets and the lookout loop without a long internal drive after dark.

Pondalowie has bush tent sites plus a separate caravan/trailer section. Casuarina is a nearby official option. Shell Beach and Cable Bay Beach camps sit on the west-coast loop for quieter nights when you booked them.

All common sites are unpowered. Long-drop toilets are common. Peak weekends fill early. Day visitors use day-use parking — do not squat on booked pads.

Gym Beach camp — separate road

Gym Beach campground is reached via Corny Point / Gym Beach Road off Marion Bay Road. The Stenhouse–Pondalowie internal network does not connect there.

If you booked Gym Beach, drive that access deliberately with daylight. Do not invent a short-cut through Pondalowie after a day of lookouts.

The Gym Beach Hike is a separate long-walk product (~9.8 km / 4 hours). Camping there does not make the hike optional or short.

Inneston heritage lodges

Engineers, Gatehouse, Mallee, Managers, Norfolk and other named lodges appear on official Parks SA lists — re-check live names and availability. Solar/gas, self-contained, official booking only.

Bring linen unless the booking says otherwise. Minimum stays can apply. Walking the public Historic Walk is not a tour of private rooms — respect booked guests and signed parking.

Lodges are not Airbnb-style affiliates on this site. Book only on parks.sa.gov.au.

Fire, bees and overnight realism

Solid-fuel fire bans apply in the listed seasonal window (2025–26: 22 Nov 2025 – 1 Apr 2026 for this park — re-check). Gas is usually OK except Total Fire Ban days. No firewood collection.

Feral bees: Parks SA has posted higher than normal activity park-wide at last re-check (16 Aug 2026) — care at camps. Screenshot the alert before you lose signal.

Do not arrive after dark to an unfamiliar pad if you can avoid it. Headlamp, offline booking screenshot and a known reverse plan matter more than one extra lookout at dusk.

When park beds are full

Marion Bay is the closest commercial strip outside the entrance. Warooka and Minlaton are useful mid-peninsula bases on the Adelaide drive. Those commercial stays may use Booking.com affiliate links elsewhere on this site — park camping never does.

A sold-out Pondalowie weekend is not an invitation to free-camp on dunes or vegetation. Downgrade to a day-trip or a gateway town night.

FAQ

Tap a question to expand the answer.

Does camping include vehicle entry?

Often yes — confirm on the specific booking. Do not treat it as a blanket rule across every product and date.

Can I book park camping through Booking.com on this site?

No. Official Parks SA camping and heritage lodges are never affiliated. Commercial gateway stays in Marion Bay / Warooka / Minlaton may use Booking.com links elsewhere on the site.

Is linen provided in Inneston lodges?

Expect to bring your own linen unless Parks SA states otherwise for your lodge and booking. Confirm on the official booking page.

Can I collect firewood?

No. For 2025–26 Parks SA lists wood/solid-fuel fires banned in this park from 22 November 2025 to 1 April 2026 — re-check the current fire-restrictions PDF. Gas is usually OK except Total Fire Ban days.
