Gym Beach & Browns Beach

Northern/remote beach pair. Gym Beach campground has a completely separate access road. Browns Beach is rough, exposed water — look, do not treat it as a swim beach.

  • Best for: People who planned the separate road, the long Gym Beach hike, or a booked Gym Beach site
  • Time: A dedicated half-day or overnight — not something to squeeze in after Stenhouse
  • Gym Beach: Corny Point / Gym Beach Road off Marion Bay Road — not the internal park loop. Browns Beach is signed from the main park side.

The access rule that ruins days

Gym Beach is the classic wrong-turn. People see it on the park map and drive the internal Stenhouse–Pondalowie network until they run out of road. The campground and that beach access sit on Gym Beach Road off Marion Bay Road via Corny Point. Plan it as its own destination.

If Gym Beach is the goal, drive there first with a full day or an overnight booking. Do not “fit it in” after Cape Spencer on a same-day Adelaide reverse.

Browns Beach is signed from the park side as a rough, exposed northern beach. It is a look-and-respect stop, not a family swim beach and not a rock-climbing venue.

Gym Beach Hike realism

Parks SA lists the Gym Beach Hike at about 9.8 km return / 4 hours. Start 550 m south of the Browns Beach car park on the official alignment — verify on the walks PDF and on-site signs.

Carry more water than you think you need. Heat, wind and exposure cut more trips short than distance alone. This is the longest common walk in the park; treat it like one.

If you only have a day from Adelaide, skip this hike and do Stenhouse + Cape Spencer instead. Come back when the hike is the plan, not the afterthought.

Gym Beach camping

Gym Beach campground is official Parks SA only — book before you leave home. It sits on the separate access road, so your mental model of “the park loop” does not apply.

Same fee-split rules as the rest of the park: vehicle entry vs camping vs lodges. Same firewood and solid-fuel rules. Same patchy coverage — screenshot everything on Wi-Fi.

What not to stack

A successful Gym Beach day is Gym Beach (and maybe Browns look). It is not Gym + Ethel + Pondalowie + Royston on the same clock. Groups that try usually end up reverse-driving in the dark.

Overnight Pondalowie plans should leave Gym Beach out unless you explicitly booked Gym Beach and drove the separate road on purpose.
